The small grounds, to which there is free access throughout the year, lead to the château’s main courtyard and terraces, which offer superb views over the valley and the lakes, which, along with the château, date back to the Middle Ages. The grounds, made up of pleasantly-designed lawns and driveways laid out in the late 18th century, are also planted with magnificent old trees that offer a contrast of light and shade throughout the day.

The small grounds have been kept in a rather bucolic style, and lead on to the wilder large grounds below, around the lakes in the valley. From the drives leading to the château, the eye is drawn by the magnificent perspective which is gradually revealed, ending in a magnificent view from the terraces that is unique in Haute-Marne.

The valley bottom around the lakes forms the large grounds of the Château estate, and people are free to walk here also. The large grounds, overlooked by the wooded hills and the château, are set in a fairly untamed landscape that creates a romantic atmosphere from which Verlaine, who visited Reynel, took inspiration in several of his poems.

The village of Reynel, which, like the château, dates back to the early Middle Ages, was a stronghold in those days that became an important town. It still has its fortified gate, which is listed as a Historic Monument, as is the 18th century church. Reynel thus has three listed monuments and the Reynel site itself is listed. Reynel has a rich history and this important stronghold belonged to a number of great families until it fell into ruin during the Thirty Years’ War. This whole ensemble is what makes Reynel so attractive, and visitors should not miss out on the opportunity of a free walk in the grounds.
