With its bucolic setting of lakes, a waterfall, fishing ground, beehives and garden-orchard, Domaine de Lavaux, designed around a house built in the 17th and 19th centuries, is characteristic of the Picturesque period. Its landscaped grounds are a unique example of the rock garden art, containing a remarkable set of decorative structures and features, made of reinforced mortar and giving the illusion of wood, stone or rock, and built between 1908 and 1912 by the artisan “rocailleur” Ernest Chaumeton, from the Creuse region, who was awarded a silver medal at the Universal Exposition in 1900.
Situated at the heart of an agricultural and forestry estate, and a testimony to a self-sufficient way of life, Domaine de Lavaux is a tribute to the tastes of an era that stood at the crossroads between Romanticism and technical innovation. It has been listed in the Historic Monuments Inventory since 2014.
